BlackBerry DEVCON: What to expect

DEVCON

BlackBerry DEVCON is one of the most important parts of the BlackBerry community.  It is basically the Comic Con of the BlackBerry world, where hundreds and thousands of new and veteran BlackBerry developers meet to talk shop and learn more about the platform.  In the below video, Mike Kirkup, the Director of Developer Relations for RIM, speaks with several other RIM employees about what DEVCON will be like.  If you don’t want to spend the 3 minutes watching the video, I will have the entire conversation summarized after the jump!

In the above video, BlackBerry DEVCON is spoken about with little detail, so as not to spoil any surprises.  They did add that we will finally be seeing the ‘Intro to BlackBerry’ in the morning, which will give veteran devs a chance to share experience and provide guidance.  From there, there will be keynote speakers and the famous (or infamous) BlackBerry DEVCON party.

Are any of the pups planning on going to DEVCON this year?  If you have been before or plan on going, make sure to comment below with your experiences!

Vodafone and the 9800 bring you a romantic comedy

VodafoneAd

We’ve all grown accustomed to BlackBerry ads having the tendency to lack a ‘fun-ness’ to them.  They’re rather bland and boring, but Vodafone has just put out a commercial that speaks for itself. It’s definitely one that we can all relate with, and may make you chuckle a little bit. It’s good to see that ads are starting to trend in a more positive way. Give it a watch and let us know what you think of it!

BlackBerry Style video demos leaked

stylevideo

If you don’t like the Torch 9800 and are desperately waiting for another BlackBerry with BlackBerry 6, there’s some good news for you. The BlackBerry clamshell flip-phone – called the 9670 Style – made appearances in some demo videos on YouTube. The Style will have a full-QWERTY keyboard, CDMA, Wi-Fi, GPS, 240×320 external display resolution, 360×400 internal display resolution and a 5 megapixel camera. Actually I was hoping for some live-action hands-on video but those are fine for now. The demo videos show the zooming functionality, the home screen and the external display functionality. The zooming feature is actually pretty interesting though I still don’t really like the form factor of the phone.

Watch the videos and tell us what you think.

BlackBerry Torch gets Colorwared

bbtorchcolor

While everyone is still unsure if the Torch 9800 along with BlackBerry 6 gets RIM back in the game, everyone is pretty sure that it looks good. And now it can look even better. Colorware now has the Torch 9800 available for endless customization. It’s a lot of fun just to toy around with the endless possibilities to customize the Torch 9800. Why don’t you try it yourself?
It’s available for $250 if you send your own or $1,050 if you buy a new one without contract. Is anyone with me, thinking that this is pretty expensive? Anyway, it’s fun and the preview makes me want to have one.
Check out their video below, if you want to, otherwise feel free to have some fun here.

BlackBerry 6 for Bold 9700 video walkthrough

Since I saw the Torch 9800 releasing I’ve been waiting for something like this: The guys of Boy Genius Report made a video walkthrough of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 running BlackBerry 6! Turns out it runs really smooth and responds snappy. Seems to be wortht the wait although my fingers are practically burning for this to reach my Bold 9700. Boot time seems to be about 1 minute, which is okay. It’s a full implementation of BlackBerry 6, no “lite” release as some rumours said. We will get WebKit browser, universal search, Social Feeds app, etc.

I’m hoping for a quick release, this looks pretty ready and useful to me. I can’t get my hands on a Torch as fast as you guys can, so obviously I’ll be getting this as fast as possible. What about you? Trying this or rather get a Torch?

AT&T releases the BlackBerry Torch’s TV debut

BlackBerryTorch

If there is one thing RIM really needs now, it’s a carrier to support them and provide their products with some brilliant marketing. AT&T have finally released a flashy commercial for the BlackBerry smartphone of the season, and it’s a start.  It’s a nice ad, but it just doesn’t POP. RIM is in dire need of some POP beyond what the device does itself. This will be the first BlackBerry with BlackBerry 6, as well as the first to integrate the BlackBerry keyboard will a full-on touchscreen.  Let us know what you think of the 9800′s star performance in the comments below!

Browser comparison: Torch 9800 vs Storm 2 in Acid3 test

With the new Webkit browser many users are interested in how well the browser actually does. While Kevin from Crackberry compared it to its other competitors, the guys from bbleaks compared it directly to a Storm2 and put both through an Acid3 test. Check out their video and notice the massive improvement this browser is going to bring. I’m actually really excited to try it out myself. On the one hand it looks like RIM definitely made a big leap forward here, on the other hand though RIM still can’t compete against most Android devices or the iPhone 4. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

New BlackBerry Webkit browser vs the competitors

ibb-browser1

If you had to choose one feature of BlackBerry 6 to be seen on OS 5, I’m pretty sure you would go for the web browser. BlackBerry users have wanted to see the web browser improve more than anything else. With the Torch 9800 and OS 6 we finally get to see WebKit rendering on our BlackBerries. As you may know from several hands-on videos, compared to the old browser it’s a huge difference.

Though the big questions is how the new BlackBerry browser does its job compared to the latest high-end devices. Kevin from Crackberry was asking himself the same question and he tried out for him self. The video is pretty interesting and a little disappointing. He matched up the BlackBerry Torch 9800 with the Apple iPhone 4 and the new Android-based Samsung Captivate. No matter what, the winner is clearly not the Torch 9800. The good news though: It did a really good job compared to what we’ve seen so far on other BlackBerries. If you come from OS 5 you’ll notice a massive improvement.

Check out the source link to view Kevin’s full results. Don’t forget to share your thoughts with us, we would really like to know what you think about the new BlackBerry browser.

AT&T Torch commercial

The guys from Crackberry filmed a lot videos while attending the AT&T / RIM event yesterday but this particular movie is kind of exciting. It’s the first commercial featuring the Torch 9800 on AT&T. It will be broadcasted to your television out there soon to make you want to buy one. Well as for me I have to say it works. I really like this commercial and I can’t wait to see how other carriers (especially now that we know all Canadian carries and some UK carriers will have it) will feature the Torch 9800 in their commercials.

What do you think about the commercial? Do you like it or do you think it’s strange? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
