Missing the standby function? Not a chance!

KeypadLock-20100422-150156-067

When I caught first word of phasing out the standby function of the mute key on BlackBerrys, I was a little upset. That is how I keep from pressing keys when I pocket my beloved BlackBerry. I recently switched back to my Tour from my 9700, and updated to a newer OS version (OS 5.0.0.591 in case anyone was wondering) that no longer supports the standby function to test it out for myself. After about two weeks of use, I have decided that I do not miss the mute key doubling as the standby key at all.

Twitter for BlackBerry-20100217-164025-166

Last Thursday (Feb. 11), RIM released an invite-only beta version of Twitter for BlackBerry. It has been a hot topic for a while, and a highly anticipated release from RIM.  I know many of you are wondering how RIM’s Twitter app holds up next to the competition? Quite well, actually. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy and I must say, I’m pretty impressed.

Review: Foursquare

Foursquare

A short while back Foursquare announced their much anticipated application for BlackBerry. Foursquare is not necessarily new to social media scene, but their support for BlackBerry is. When a social media gets to BlackBerry, it seems to storm the internet. Personally, I have never cared much for social media unless I can efficiently use it from my devices.

Review: Wattpad

wattpad-20100121-125649-146

One of the hot items over the holidays this past Christmas was, among many other ereaders, the Kindle. Announced a few weeks back, there will soon be a Kindle application for the BlackBerry. One thing many people have been looking to do is find a sufficient application for their BlackBerry. Rather than shelling out the money for a new device, why not look for a reader substitute for the device they already have?

Review: Poynt

Capture19_26_36

I can never seem to think of a place to eat when I’m out and about or on vacation. Poynt comes to save the day fairly regularly in my life. I have been using Poynt since the initial beta release and have loved it from the start. Among being one of the most visually pleasing applications available for BlackBerry, it is also the most useful of all of the location based search applications I have tried. I have used Berry 411, Live Search, and many other search applications from the time that I started using my first BlackBerry a few years ago. Nobody provides quite as complete of a service as the Poynt team.

Review: BerryBuzz

I am constantly finding myself not caring to check my phone every time it vibrates or makes a noise. Sure, I like to see what type of messages I have received, but I don’t always want to pull my phone out, take it out of standby, then finally see whether I got a new BBM message, email, text, or anything else for that matter. BerryBuzz speeds up the process and enables me to determine whether I should view my messages instantly, or whether I can let them wait.

Review: OtterBox Commuter Series for Bold 9700

IMG00086-20100105-2144

I have always liked silicon skin cases for my BlackBerry devices, but have always preferred hard cases over them for their protection.  The one complaint I have against silicon cases are how hard they make it to slide your phone in and out of your pocket. Hard cases usually add a good bit of bulk and can make it difficult to press some buttons. With the Commuter series of the OtterBox for the Bold 9700, you get the best of both worlds.

Review: Bolt Browser

Bolt Homescreen

One of the major complaints about BlackBerry smartphones as a consumer device is the lack of an intuitive web browser. Bolt Browser seeks to fix that problem. When it comes down to it, the Bolt browser is much quicker than the native counterpart. It also seems to render full web pages a little more clearly than the native browser. It feels a little more like using a computer’s browser for those who have never used a third-party web browser on their BlackBerry.
