QNX OS will one day be on all BlackBerrys

We hope you like what you’ve seen with the BlackBerry PlayBook, because you’re looking at the future of all BlackBerry devices. Earlier this morning during a  breakfast event at DevCon 2010, an unnamed RIM VP confirmed that the QNX OS seen on the PlayBook will eventually replace the BlackBerry OS we’ve known for so long. He emphasized the transition will be a gradual one, with BlackBerry 7 serving as something of a middle ground between the two platforms.

We’re thrilled to hear RIM’s “unofficial” plan, and from what we’ve seen, the QNX OS is everything RIM needs to bring it into the 21st century. Our major concern is centered around the developer environment. Already devs have largely abandoned ship in favor of iOS and Android, and having two support two platforms for the foreseeable future likely won’t win any friends. Perhaps RIM should take a page from Nokia’s Qt book?

We’d love to hear your thoughts on RIM’s planned transition, and on QNX in general. Let us know in the comments!

Leak: OS 6.0.0.214 for the BlackBerry Bold 9780

BlackBerry Bold 9780

Even though the Blackberry Bold 9780 hasn’t been officially released, that shouldn’t stop us from getting OS leaks for it. While rummaging through the information super highway late last night something very interesting caught my eye. As I dug a little deeper I realized that what I had stummbled across was a leaked update for BlackBerry OS 6, version 6.0.0.214. Now before you get all excited this update is supposedly for the yet to be released BlackBerry Bold 9780.  The 9780 is eventually rumored to take the place of the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Here is a list of specs comparing the two devices.

  • Processor: Both the Bold 9700 and 9780 share the same 624 MHz processor.
  • RAM: The 9780 has 512MB of flash RAM while the 9700 is stuck with 256MB
  • Storage: Both can use microSD cards up to 32GB in size
  • Screen: Both share the same 480×360 resolution screen at 2.44 inches
  • Camera: The Bold 9700 has a 3.15 MP camera while the 9780 has a 5 MP camera (both have LED flash)
  • Other: They also share the same cellular, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi components
  • DISCLAIMER: Only attempt to upgrade your OS if you are comfortable doing so or know what you are doing. BBerryDog is not responsible for any damages to your phone in the process of upgrading your OS. Use all precautionary steps and back up all of your data before proceeding with the upgrade.

Now if your feeling adventurous and you own a device with specs similar to the BlackBerry Bold 9780, this may be just what the doctor ordered. Keep in mind that this is an unofficial build. Video: BlackBerry Bold 9650 running BlackBerry 6…again

    9650BB6

LoiuV over at BBLeaks is at it again, and so is ol’ Salomondrin. This time it’s the BlackBerry Bold 9650 running the famed BlackBerry 6 on video. I’ve been curious about how BlackBerry 6 would run on a non-touchscreen device, and I guess this answers my question. To me, it doesn’t seem (and I know it isn’t) as functional, but it is usable. For me, touchscreens have won me over and I believe I would rather have BlackBerry 6 in a flavor with nothing but a touchscreen, if RIM decides to make one without SurePress. If you’re having the same doubts as me, be sure to catch the video below.

After you catch the video, tell us your thoughts in the comments. How does the non-touch version of BlackBerry 6 stack up to the Torch’s version? Would you prefer touchscreen to non?

Leak: OS 5.0.0.882 for the Bold 9000, 8520, and 8900

    Collage

Wow, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen any leaked OS’s for any devices. We’re not exactly on top of them as we’re here primarily for other reasons and we’re more interested in BlackBerry 6 than every loose end RIM has yet to tie up with all the different OS versions for each device. Either way, this is the highest OS version number we’ve seen yet for any of these three devices! There is no changelog associated with this leak, but I’m sure it’s only minor performance upgrades here and there. If you install it and notice any huge differences, let us know in the comments or our forums.

If you’re interested in downloading any of them to your device click the following links:

If you’re interested and don’t know how to upgrade your OS, you can click here for a tutorial, and always be sure to do a backup prior to doing anything with your device. NOTE: Only attempt to upgrade your OS if you are comfortable doing so or know what you are doing. BBerryDog is not responsible for any damages to your phone in the process of upgrading your OS. Use all precautionary steps and back up all of your data before proceeding with the upgrade.
