BlackBerry 9570 Odin Refresh gets the axe from Verizon?

In the past weeks we’ve seen multiple prospective Storm units, but we haven’t really been sure of what we were seeing.  The BlackBerry prototype with the trackpad and the Odin Refresh have been leaked, but it looks like the Odin Refresh won’t be coming out at all.  Because the Refresh is a Storm 2 with enhanced specs, it has seems to have been given the axe by Verizon, hopefully in favor of an even better phone, or an LTE Storm, in the near future.  While this is purely heresay and speculation and this point, we will let you know as soon as we have official affirmation.  So how many of you pups are disappointed?  Were you looking forward to the Odin Refresh, or are you just fine holding out for a possible LTE model in the future?

LTE to launch before end of 2010, phones to follow suit

lte

Although this isn’t BlackBerry specific news, I think it is definitely something of interest to those of you looking for 4G speeds.  Verizon will be launching it’s LTE network (basically 4G) in 30 “NFL Cities” before 2010 is over.  Verizon senior federal sales executive Bernie McMonagle did not specify which cities, but he did specify that they’d be large metropolitan areas and that the whole country should be covered by 2013!

Sadly, LTE phones will not be released immediately, due to scarcity, be we can only hope to see the future of BlackBerry enter at this time.  With Verizon being one of BlackBerry’s biggest American carriers, let us hope that the next generation of BlackBerry uses LTE to it’s full advantage.

Verizon: No unlimited 4G plans, LTE voice by 2012

verizon-wireless-logo_001

Many of us have been hoping (as foolish though it may have been) the arrival of LTE would usher in an era of truly unlimited data without the pesky 5 gigabyte cap currently imposed on 3G data plans. As we could’ve predicted, that dream will not be coming true with Verizon’s LTE network. Big Red’s CEO, Lowell McAdam, mentioned at this week’s Barclays Capital conference that he’d like to see the company move away from unlimited data plans; preferring to return to the days of charging for “buckets of megabytes” (something most of the world already does). While on the surface this seems like a terrible idea, we always knew a tiered structure was inevitable, and if done right, these plans mean you’ll only be charged for the data you use (something that could potentially benefit the light-data users).

Also on the docket were Verizon’s timetable for its budding LTE network. McAdams expects Verizon to be using LTE for voice services by 2012, with the first round of LTE-capable handsets arriving in early 2011; a few of which will be seen at CES 2011. Fortunately for us, RIM appears to be on-the-ball this time around, and has eyes on producing one of those early LTE devices (Storm3 anyone?). We’d love to hear your thoughts on Verizon’s plans, particularly the data plan changes!

Rumor: Storm 3 details and mockup preview

ScreenHunter_01May.1811.19

Get out your salt licks folks; this is one rumor that seems a little far-fetched for me. ELICITE supposedly got some one-on-one time with a Storm 3 prototype for testing. We all seem to brush news of the Storm series off now, considering the gross amounts of negative feedback the device received. This one though, grabbed my attention quite effectively. The design is very futuristic, the acclaimed OS is much more advanced that BlackBerry 6, and it just doesn’t seem like a move RIM would make. Hopefully, I’m wrong.  Specs and the short clip can be found after the break.

RIM not so slow to adopt LTE

lte

For some of you that have been with BlackBerry for a while now, we’ve had to stick it out through some rough times. For instance, when EDGE and 3G were introduced to the blooming mobile world, all of us BlackBerry users were patiently waiting for RIM to adopt the new standard technology. This time around, it seems as if BlackBerry has jumped on the LTE bandwagon at the right time (before it actually hits the market). RIM is allegedly one of the manufacturers currently working on an LTE phone for Verizon Wireless according to CEO Lowell McAdam. We have a minimum of a six month wait before we will see any LTE live here in the US but the wait for an LTE phone was projected to be even further out. Maybe RIM can be the first to release an LTE capable phone.

RIM has a history of being a slow adopter (touchscreens, EDGE, 3G, flip phones, etc.) and very conservative, but it’s very good to see them realizing that it has hindered them in many ways. Hopefully with the release of BlackBerry 6, an LTE capable BlackBerry, and more risky designs coming from RIM, we will see them secure their seat at the top. They’ve been up there for a while and we know they don’t want to come down.
