How-To: Get Google Sync working without creating duplicates

GoogleSync

Google Sync is something that has been riddled with problems for many a user, including myself.  For those of you with too little time to mess with it or a lack of problem solving skills, here is a step by step way to make Google Sync work for you.

  1. Backup your phone.
  2. After phone is backed-up, download Google Sync (comes with the Google Mobile App).
  3. Run Google Sync for your contacts and/or calendar.
  4. Go into the Google account that you used sync with, and manually delete all multiple contacts (Or let Google find the duplicates and merge for you.)
  5. Do partial restore of your BlackBerry and only restore contacts.
  6. Voila!  Your BlackBerry will no longer multiply contacts when a sync occurs, and you will no longer have multiple contacts in your ‘Berry.

Now, some may ask why Google Sync is necessary, especially is you regularly backup your BlackBerry.  I personally like Google Sync because it gives me the ability to access my contacts from both my computer and my phone.  I am also able to, if I lose my BlackBerry or decide to go to another device, able to either manually add all my contacts back, or sync to Google Sync and immediately have my contacts restored. We hope this solution works for you, and if you have any horror stories, success stories, or anything of that nature relating to Google Sync, let us know!

How-To: Deleting apps

Well, the World Cup is over, and the Spaniards are the champions. Congrats Spain! Since we recommended a plethora of applications to keep you current with your favorite teams and the World Cup, I figured it might be kind of me to help you get rid of the World Cup applications that you will not be needing for another four years. There are three ways that you can remove an application from your device, both of which are pretty simple. The first way is from the applications page or within any of the stock folders or any you may have created. Simply highlight the application you want to delete, press the menu key, and select delete. You will have to confirm the deletion and your phone will become unusable for the following minute or so. It will then ask you if you want to reboot now or later. Keep in mind that rebooting a BlackBerry can take forever depending on what OS you’re running on which device, so if you’re deleting more than one app at a time, I wouldn’t recommend rebooting until you’re done.

The second way to delete an application from your phone is to do it from the options menu. When you open Options, go to Applications. Once the Application page loads all of the Third-party applications installed on your device, simply highlight the application you want to remove, press the menu key, and select delete.

The third way to delete an application from the phone itself is only possible if you downloaded the application via App World. Open up App World, click on the far bottom right button, My World. Once My World loads, highlight the application you want to delete, press the menu key, and select delete.

The second option when it come to deleting applications is plugging your BlackBerry into your computer and using Desktop Manager to do the brute of the work. If you’re only deleting one application, I would say do it from the device, it will take less time. If you’re deleting two, three, or more applications, let Desktop Manager do it. Basically, all you have to do is plug in your BlackBerry to your computer, load Desktop Manager, and click the Application Loader tab. Once this page loads, simply check all of the applications you want to remove and click next. Desktop Manager will delete the applications from your device, the BlackBerry will reboot, and you’re finished. Deleting old applications that you never use is a good idea if your device begins to slow down some. The older BlackBerry models didn’t come with a lot of extra memory and slow down upon installing just a few applications, so spare your free memory and do battery pulls on a regular basis to speed up your BlackBerry.

How-To: Backup

DesktopManager

One of the most important things you can do for your own sanity and the livelihood of those around you is to back up your data on your phone. It never fails, every week I have a customer approach me at work asking, “My phone was wiped, is there any way I can restore my data?”My answer, “No.” Of course, if the customer had done the responsible thing and backed up their data, they would never have to worry about that situation.  This is usually not the customer’s fault though. There is no mention of backing up data in the manuals. When they buy the phone, the associate who sold the phone usually never mentions it. If you never tell a child to make their bed, are they going to? In most cases, no. Learn how to backup your precious data after the jump!

How-To: Shortcuts and hotkeys

One of my favorite things about my BlackBerry is how fast I can navigate and get things done on it. My favorite built-in feature is the keyboard shortcuts, or hotkeys rather, that RIM has supplied us with. Not only have they supplied us BlackBerry zombies with a way to open applications from the home screen with a single click, they have also given us a way to do essentially everything faster on our phones (given you don’t have a Storm, sorry guys!). If, in fact, you do have a QWERTY BlackBerry, or even a SureType BlackBerry, you can use that do your advantage. Here’s how:

How-To: Media

DSC05515 - Copy

The more RIM focuses on devices for consumers, the more they try to make their devices media based. The one thing they have seemed to have left out is making the device media friendly. The most simple way I have found to add my music and pictures to my BlackBerry is to use the Mass Storage Mode provided by the phone. This makes your computer view your BlackBerry as an external drive. Either plugging the BlackBerry into the computer, or removing the MicroSD card from the phone and using a card reader of sorts to add media to the device are the easiest ways.
