Storm 3 on its way, shows up in Best Buy Mobile’s Genie system.

While this isn’t the biggest thing in the world, it’s a dinosaur bone for those pups eagerly awaiting that *ahem* GORGEOUS device that we’ve seen in pictures up to this point.  The foreshadowing of events that often comes in the Genie system has yet to fail us, and today I cannot say I’m satisfied any less.  The Storm 3 has shown up in said system, pointing to the fact that we can expect to see the Storm 3 soon.  If all goes well, it may even show up before the holiday season!

While the Storm 3 hasn’t been officially announced, and little is known about it, the pictures have put it on a pedestal for me.  According to several reliable sources, we can almost surely expect the QNX operating system on the device.  This, above all, excites me.  We can only hope that this phone is as awesome as it looks, because RIM needs a lifeline.  If nothing else, we need a phone that makes Taylor drop his sushi addiction to save up some money for it.

BlackBerry Storm 3 aka Monaco, and touchscreen Bold known as Montana?

It looks like RIM has finally decided to step up their game and start competing with Android, iPhone, etc.  All of the following information is based on rumors and hearsay.  Diversifying fact from fiction is impossible at this point in time, so take this all with 1.2×10^9 molecules of NaCl.

One thing we can almost guarantee is that the refresh to the Storm 2 (also known as the Odin Refresh) is a scrapped project.  However, there is still rumor of a Storm 3.  If you didn’t see the original article on the Storm 3, click here to see it.  Like all BlackBerrys, the Storm 3 must adopt a crappy nickname before it is released so that RIM can dazzle us with unintelligible bologna that will only make sense when the phone is actually announced… but, I digress.  The Storm 3′s super-awesome codename is the “Monaco”.  Don’t ask us why because, to be honest, we have no clue.

However, here comes my favorite part of this news.  There have been to pictures in relatively rapid succession from Mr. 1.3-megapixel, non-autofocus man himself of a BlackBerry Bold totally devoid of a trackpad.  Instead, it seems that this Bold will sport a touchscreen, similar to what we saw on the Torch (minus the sliding mechanism).  This phone has been codenamed Montana and pegged as the Bold 9900.  Above is something of an artists rendition, and not an actual picture.

I have to say that I am extremely curious about both the Monaco and Montana, but the Montana in particular.  I think it’s an awesome idea, but RIM needs to really deliver on this one if it is to be a success.  With the holiday season quickly approaching, a fire needs to be lit under RIM’s behind.

Poll: Would you buy a Storm 3 with QNX technology?

It’s no secret that some of us ‘Berry heads around here are growing impatient with the stagnant OS BlackBerry has left us stranded on. I’ll admit, BlackBerry 6 was a nice improvement, but it just doesn’t quite stack up to the competition when it comes to media consumption, applications, and other various features. I still love my BlackBerry, I’m just growing bored. I buy new ones to keep myself occupied, but I don’t really get excited over new BlackBerry models hitting the street. However, the Storm 3 does look nice. If this device hits before years’ end and is running QNX software, I will be on that like a cat on a mouse.

Storm 3 specs revealed

Ready for some Storm 3 rumors? Yeah? Well, okay, here we go: The guys from BBLeaks have received some reports on what may be the specs for the Storm 3. It’s not sure yet, if it’s going to be called the Storm 3 since it was rumored as an ‘odin refresh’. Still, Research in Motion has been working on making a new device to help the Storm series regain popularity.

This is the spec list created from the different sources, so keep in mind that this is just a rumor and some of the listed items have multiple options, i.e. camera pixels or Memory.

  • Camera: 5MP, 2592×1944 pixels or 8 MP, 3264×2448 pixels, fixed focus, dual-LED flash
  • Memory: 8 or 16 GB storage w/ optional expandable to 32GB, 512 MB or 1GB RAM, 1 GB ROM
  • Display:  3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
  • GPRS: Class 32
  • Optical trackpad
  • Ringtones: MP3, WAV ringtones
  • MP3: MP3/WAV/eAAC+/WMA player, MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player
  • Bluetooth: Yes, v3.0 with A2DP
  • 3G: HSDPA, 10.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 2 Mbps
  • Addons: Wi-Fi, USB, GPS, OS, Video
  • Weight: Standard battery, Li-Ion 1200 mAh (BL-4D)
  • Talktime: Up to 432 h (2G) / Up to 480 h (3G)
  • Standby: Up to 9 h (2G) / Up to 5 h (3G)

The image above seems to actually be the Storm 3, according to what BBLeaks’ sources said. It’s still unclear if we’ll see the ‘ordinary’ BlackBerry 6 on the device or if we’ll get to see QNX software. Personally, I’m hoping to see some kind of QNX OS on it. What about you?

Adding to the list, there were also rumors that the Storm 3 could be the first 4G BlackBerry, but there hasn’t been any mention of it for the current specs. Keep in mind, that those are just rumors, so take ‘em with a grain of salt, but don’t be too surprised if the device hits the stores in early 2011 as the BlackBerry Storm 3.

Anyone got excited (again)? Tell us in the comments below.

Storm 3 spotted in Verizon’s system

If you’re on Verizon Wireless and you’re jealous of everyone on AT&T using their Torches and everything, don’t worry, there might just be some good news for you. The Storm series was liked and disliked a lot and a lot of people were not exactly what you would call happy when they learned that RIM won’t update just one of them to BlackBerry 6. However, the Storm 3 (9570) just popped up in Cellbrite (an internal system used by Verizon Wireless service technicians).

What exactly does this mean? Well, there’s now a little chance that we might see the Storm 3 hitting the store shelves somewhen in the near future, equipped with BlackBerry 6.
What do you guys think? Do you want a BlackBerry Storm 3 or would you rather want BlackBerry 6 ported to your old an beloved Storm 1 and 2′s?

BlackBerry Tablet, Storm 3, and new OS coming at DEVCON

If you read my earlier article about BlackBerry Developers Conference, you know that this year is already shaping up to be fantastic.  On top of all the great things that the guys over at RIM have in store for those at DEVCON, we now have some information on what you’ll actually be able to see there as well!

First off, the long anticipated BlackBerry tablet (also called the BlackPad) will make it’s debut at DEVCON.  As you may or may know know, the BlackPad will not be running BlackBerry 6, or any variation of it.  A company called QNX, which RIM bought out in April, has designed a unique operating system for the BlackPad which will also be making it’s debut at DEVCON.

One of yesterday’s articles (seen here) brought you a possible Odin Refresh or Storm 3 leaked photo.  Speculation will not last for much longer though, as the Storm 3 will be making it’s debut alongside the BlackPad.  Rumor has it that the Storm 3 will be running the same QNX built software that the BlackPad is running, which would further confirm that yesterday’s article was the Odin Refresh.  We can only hope that the QNX operating system is equally as good, if not better, than BlackBerry 6.

So how many of the pups are planning on going to DEVCON?  If you weren’t planning on going before, has the recent news of a BlackBerry tablet and Storm 3 debut changed your mind?  Let us know in the comments below!

BlackBerry Storm 9570 running BlackBerry 6. Odin Refresh or Storm 3?

If anyone has read Alex’s Monday article on the possible Storm 3 (seen here), we still have no further information on that.  Regardless, a photo was leaked showing a 9570 BlackBerry with a touchscreen running BlackBerry 6.  Now, we know that the most recent storm was the 9550, so what we’re seeing here is not necessarily the Storm 3.  What we’re seeing is most likely the Odin Refresh, which is basically a Storm 2 with the 512MB of RAM necessary for BlackBerry 6.

Whether or not we will see this in the near future is up to speculation, but if this is merely the Odin Refresh, I’m still more excited for the Storm 3.  If the picture we saw in Alex’s article (linked above) were the real deal, then the Storm 3 will no doubt be one heck of a phone.  As excited as I am to possibly see BlackBerry 6 ship out on it’s first Verizon device, I’m really hoping that we see something along the lines of the Torch come to Verizon in the near future.  We all need some wow-factor to hit BlackBerry, and soon.

So what do you say pups?  Will you buy the Refresh or wait for the Storm 3 to hit shelves?  Also, what do you think we’re looking at here, Storm 3 or Odin Refresh?

First picture of the BlackBerry Storm 3?

This may be big news and I’m all excited about it. This is what seems to be the BlackBerry Storm 3. The guys at BerryReview got an anonymous tip and it really seems to look legit. According to the tipster, the Storm 3 features a 3.7″ display and 8GB of internal memory. Rumor has it, that this device will have mobile Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity as well.

Are you excited? I sure am. Does this look legit to you? Give us your thoughts in the comments.

Roadmap points to October release of the BlackBerry Storm 3 9570

Storm3

Earlier last week a leaked Verizon roadmap for 2010/2011 surfaced pointing to new BlackBerry devices being released in October, and even a tablet in November. Keep in mind that this roadmap has not been confirmed, but it does invoke interest. Among the devices to be released is the Storm 3 9570 with a  SurePress touchscreen, and running the latest BlackBerry 6 operating system. This contradicts rumors of the Storm 3 ditching SurePress and introducing its own unique operating system. On a brighter note, sources  report that RIM will be adding a mobile hotspot feature to the Storm 3 as well.  Not all bad, so far.

The roadmap goes on to state that RIM will also be introducing the BlackBerry Curve 3 9330 to Verizon customers. I see no real benefit that the Curve 3 offers over the 8530 other than BlackBerry 6. The specs are exactly the same on both devices. The chrome bezel is a nice touch though!

If this roadmap turns out to be spot on, it looks like this could be a big waste of time and money for RIM. I truley hope that this turns out to be fake, and RIM blows our minds come October. What are your feelings on the supposedly leaked roadmap for Verizon? Do you look forward to what RIM is palnning, or is this more of the same ol’, same ol’? Sound off below in the comments.

Friday News Roundup!

lasso

As many of you have probably noticed, we’ve been pretty inactive for the past two days, and for that I offer our sincerest apologies. I won’t rehash details, but needless to say we experienced something of a “perfect storm” of non-work issues that left several of us indisposed. As a way of apologizing, here is a roundup of all the major news we missed!

- BlackBerry 6 Home Screen Evolution: The official BlackBerry blog, Inside BlackBerry, posted an excellent piece on the evolution of the Home Screen in BlackBerry 6. Our favorite excerpt:

If there was one thing you want our readers to know about the Home Screen redesign, what would it be?

I’d say that the redesign of the Home Screen in BlackBerry 6 is fresh, but familiar. When you look at it, it still looks like a BlackBerry Home Screen (for example, wallpaper selection continues to be a key attribute of the visual design), but it’s been updated – much like a home renovation still ‘feels’ like home, but is actually new.

With BlackBerry 6, we are introducing a host of new features in the design, evolving the look and feel and enabling the user to really customize the Home Screen. Overall, the visuals are cleaner and sleeker, and movement between and within the applications is more fluid, allowing users to navigate their BlackBerry smartphone in a much more intuitive and interactive way.

-Bold 9800 slider and BlackBerry 6 now supported in App World: This one doesn’t come as a huge shock, but this means developers can begin submitting BlackBerry 6 applications to the App World!

-Analyst claims 4G BlackBerry Triton coming to Verizon in December: For the time being, we’re going to be pretty skeptical on this one. Analysts have a tendency to be…inaccurate, and until we see some hard evidence for the devices existence we’re going to file this one away in the “Baseless Rumor” drawer. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see a 4G BlackBerry (Storm 3?) help launch Verizon’s LTE network, and it would certainly go a long way toward helping RIM regain some ground in the Android-dominated Verizon lineup; we just prefer more facts before espousing the epicness of vaporware.

-The Bold 9780, a refresh of a refresh: The most underwhelming device to come out of Waterloo since the Curve 9300…oh wait. Continuing a disturbingly bad habit, the 9780 is a token refresh of the 9700, itself a refinement of the Bold 9000. To say we’re disappointed would be a massive understatement. RIM is competing against the likes of the Droid X, Galaxy S, iPhone 4, Evo 4G, and soon to be Windows Phone 7 running on super-solid hardware. If they want to stay relevant, we need to see some radically different hardware (like the 9800) that makes us say “Wow, I really want that”.

-Photos of  Bold 9650 running BlackBerry 6: Thank goodness! Now we know at least one current BlackBerry device will see an official update to the BlackBerry 6 OS. With the Storm 2 and Bold 9700 all but written off for OS upgrades (at least official ones), we’re glad recent 9650 owners won’t be burned three months after buying their device. Of course this continues to highlight RIM’s need to upgrade the application memory to something in the gigabyte range.

-RIM purchases “BlackPad.com”: This is the best evidence yet for the existence of the fabled BlackBerry tablet. Awful name aside, we’re not very big fans of the tablet idea here at BBerryDog (or at least this editor isn’t). The BlackBerry OS has never exactly been known as a multimedia or creative powerhouse, which happens to be the primary function of most tablets to-date. We’re not entirely opposed to the concept, but we need to see a concept before we’ll think about believing.

-The case of the mysterious AT&T monoliths: There is a lot of speculation about what these mystery monoliths contain within their glowing bowels, and so far nobody has any real idea. Most speculation points to one of three options: the Bold 9800 (which would coincide with the upcoming AT&T and BlackBerry event), an unknown Android device, or a Windows Phone 7 device (if it turns out to be some silly messaging phone, we’re quitting AT&T). We’d love for it to be the Bold 9800, but given the number of leaks, we’re wondering if it might be a Windows Phone 7 propaganda tool.

That’s all we have for now! Again, we offer our sincere apologies for the news gap and we’ll be back in action next week at full strength. For now, let us know what you think of these news developments in the comments!
