Sprint BlackBerry Oxford 9670 (clamshell) launching October 31

The BlackBerry Oxford 9670 (also referred to as the clamshell and Style) is definitely a piece of hardware that makes a lot of people question RIM and others rejoice. I’ve never been a huge fan of clamshell devices, or anything that flips or slides for that matter, but some people are rejoicing at the fact that RIM is accommodating for those who do enjoy different styles of smartphones, but I digress. The boys over at BGR have been forwarded a slide from a reputable Sprint contact with juicy information on the Oxford.

On October 31st, the Oxford will release in a gray variation at $99.99 with a $100 mail-in rebate. The Oxford sports a 5MP camera, EVDO Rev A, BlackBerry 6, full QWERTY keyboard with trackpad, WiFi and GPS, microSD card slot, and stereo Bluetooth. These specs are on par with all of the other BlackBerry devices launching these days, so we’re not seeing anything especially new here other than a late 90′s form factor. According to the slide, a purple variant is also “coming soon.” What say you folks? Who’s down with a flip smartphone and who plans on getting one on the 31st?

9670 internal overview from Boy Genius

BlackBerry9670Oxford

For those of you on the Sprint network, rejoice!  That odd looking BlackBerry we know as the 9670 Oxford is back, and this time we’re compiling all the specs that we’ve got.  For those of you who don’t remember, the Oxford is a clamshell device sporting a  QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, GPS, 5 megapixel camera, 240×320 external display, 360×400 internal display, and the optical trackpad.

Despite the reaction of many a BlackBerry user and fanboy, I must admit I actually like the idea of this phone (but not the phone itself).   A decent QWERTY clamshell is difficult to come buy, unless you want to compromise with a piece of junk that has no other redeeming qualities.  Sticking the full BlackBerry keyboard into a flip-phone formfactor just made this thing look like a Pearl Flip that ate way too much sushi and pizza (ahem, Taylor).

The BlackBerry 9670 Clamshell will be heading to Sprint the in the coming months

BlackBerry9670-Sprint

It looks as if Verizon Wireless will not be the only provider to carry the BlackBerry 9670. The crew over at BGR has “independently confirmed” that Sprint will also be offering the clamshell BlackBerry in the months to come. Sources have confirmed that they already have a Sprint branded version of the  BlackBerry 9670 in their possession. While a release date has not been officially announced, this should give Sprint users a smile on their face that are looking foward to the 9670 being released on their network.

Are any of you looking forward to getting your hands on the BlackBerry 9670? Do you like the clamshell form factor or not? Let us know in the comment section below.

BlackBerry 9300, 9670, and 9800 on video

blackberry-9800-itw-32

If we may be so bold as to cite an ageless cliche: when it rains, it pours. Once again Salomondrin has managed to get his hands on an unreleased device, only this time he has three of them. Sal has scored some quality time with an older prototype 9670 flip, the relatively uninspiring Curve 9300, and most excitingly the 9800 slider running BlackBerry 6. We won’t bore you with any mundane details; check out the videos below and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments!

The BBerryDog theme is coming in assorted colors, now available for 83xx

bbdred9700

There were a few of you requesting the BBerryDog theme in different colors, so we’re (when I say we’re I mean Don from Dream Themez) here to deliver. As of right now the only other color available is crimson from Today’s iPhone, but they will be coming in the assorted colors associated with PhoneDog’s network sites, TmoNews, Today’s iPhone, and DroidDog. (Therefore, green, fuchsia, and orange are left as you can see in the picture below.)

PhoneDog

To download your new, red BBerryDog theme, click here. As of right now it’s only available for the 85xx, 96xx, and 9700. Also, we have also received quite a few requests for a BBerryDog theme for the 83xx series. Your wait is over! You can now download the red version here from your BlackBerry Browser (blue version pending). Don is spread pretty thin between work, being a contributing editor, and making themes, so if the color you’re waiting for is not available yet, it is coming, but it may take a little longer than originally expected. He is working diligently on these themes for us and we want to make sure there is a flavor out there for everyone. So anyone who wants to show a bit of gratitude, you can follow Don on Twitter, or ask us about how you can donate. Also, if you’re an MMA fan like many of us here at BBerryDog and Don, check out Don’s other theme site Dream Themez MMA, and Unfiltered MMA where Don is a contributing editor.

U.S. Cellular leaks itself, confirms BlackBerry 9670?

BlackBerry-9670-leak-4-540x405

While device leaks are pretty commonplace in the technology world, it’s not too often that the leak comes from an official press release. This is precisely what has happened with U.S. Cellular’s recent press release (centered around their upcoming Android devices), where the carrier has apparently not only confirmed the existence (as if we needed more proof) of the 9670 clamshell, but also its intentions to carry the device. Buried fairly far into the announcement was this juicy sentence:

The carrier will release the BlackBerry Bold in early August and later this year it will offer a BlackBerry flip smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard.

While not an explicit confirmation, we very seriously doubt that RIM has more than one clamshell QWERTY device in their pipeline. Based on this timetable, a potential release would likely be around the “holiday” season. Click the source link for the full press release, and then let us know what you think in the comments!

BlackBerry 6 hybrids for 9000, 9700, 9500, 9600, 8900 and 8500 models

screenshot-20100622-164258-875

We usually don’t talk much about hybrid OS builds here at BBerryDog due to the risky nature of installing untested software on your device, but this one is just too cool to turn down. Last night BlackBerryCool clued us all in on some hybrid builds of BlackBerry 6 mixed with other leaked OS 5.0.0.xxx versions for various models.

While I am no expert on hybrid OS builds, I have installed a few on my various BlackBerrys with no problem. Essentially, a hybrid OS is formed by someone taking files from one leaked version (in this case the leaked BlackBerry 6 for the clamshell device) and merging them with an OS from another build, typically for a different device. According to BlackBerryCool, 80 files from BlackBerry 6 have been successfully copied over into the different OS 5.0.0.xxx builds. While you probably won’t see any visual differences, the main purpose of the hybrid builds is to merge the beneficial parts of multiple OS’s together. It’s a genius idea, and always fun to tinker with.

I would not recommend attempting to install an hybrid OS unless you’re comfortable installing different OS versions on your phone and recovering a bricked device. As always, downloading and installing non-official builds is done at your own risk. With that said, if you’re interested in trying out the hybrid, giving feedback, and you’re using either a 9000, 97xx, 95xx, 96xx, 89xx, or an 85xx device, go here and download your respective hybrid OS files.

Video: BlackBerry 9670 clamshell with BlackBerry 6 walkthrough

The clamshell BlackBerry that has been floating around the internet has gained a lot of hatred and a handful of followers. It has also caused a lot of confusion. BlackBerry 6 has also had its fair share of fence riders. Here we have a gift for you from The Cellular Guru. It is a hands-on with the BlackBerry 9670 running BlackBerry 6 in all of its rubber-banding fineness. I’m actually liking the design of the clamshell, and I will have to get the new OS in my hands and on my device before I will make any real judgments on it. Any new thoughts? Or do you people still hate the clamshell?

Clamshell-9670-Side

Well, look who made it to the spotlight again. The 9670 has become notorious for creating haters and lovers alike. It has been the device that really separates the two different sides to RIM’s fan base, the ones who want to see leaps and bounds in innovation, and the ones who truly love RIM’s conservatism and “sticking to the basics” approach at development. More pictures and thoughts after the break.

BlackBerry (Bold?) 9670 full QWERTY flip revealed!

blackberry-9670-6

Look what we have here! BGR has posted pictures of an awkward, full QWERTY, flip (clamshell) BlackBerry with model number 9670. Rumors have been going around for ages about a device like this. Between patents and fuzzy photoshopped images, it was hard to tell whether RIM was actually pursuing the clamshell style or not. I never really expected to see this, and especially not tonight. I had expected to see a Pearl (91xx) flip device with a full QWERTY before (what will more than likely become) a Bold flip device. More and some pictures can be seen after the break!
