RIM allows purchases through BlackBerry App World website

RIM has finally made it possible to purchase apps and download them from the BlackBerry App World website. You can also modify your My World account so that it syncs with your BlackBerry device. A Windows installer is required for installation, and as of now Mac is not supported. Payment methods include Credit cards, PayPal, and carrier billing, if supported by your carrier.

All in all, this is a pretty sweet addition to the RIM App World. Being able to sync is an option I personally want to explore. What say you. hit this link here and head over to the BlackBerry App World website, and tell us what you think.

Sprint BlackBerry Oxford 9670 (clamshell) launching October 31

The BlackBerry Oxford 9670 (also referred to as the clamshell and Style) is definitely a piece of hardware that makes a lot of people question RIM and others rejoice. I’ve never been a huge fan of clamshell devices, or anything that flips or slides for that matter, but some people are rejoicing at the fact that RIM is accommodating for those who do enjoy different styles of smartphones, but I digress. The boys over at BGR have been forwarded a slide from a reputable Sprint contact with juicy information on the Oxford.

On October 31st, the Oxford will release in a gray variation at $99.99 with a $100 mail-in rebate. The Oxford sports a 5MP camera, EVDO Rev A, BlackBerry 6, full QWERTY keyboard with trackpad, WiFi and GPS, microSD card slot, and stereo Bluetooth. These specs are on par with all of the other BlackBerry devices launching these days, so we’re not seeing anything especially new here other than a late 90′s form factor. According to the slide, a purple variant is also “coming soon.” What say you folks? Who’s down with a flip smartphone and who plans on getting one on the 31st?

Verizon Wireless holding an ‘interactive launch’ for BlackBerry 6 Oct. 14

It seems as if the boys over at BGR have done it again. This time around they received word of an “interactive launch” of BlackBerry 6 from Verizon later this week. What does that mean? Nobody really knows at this point, but it does means that Big Red has been diligently working on getting RIM’s latest piece of software out to its customers stat! The word “interactive” leads Andrew of BGR to believe that it will not actually be the launch of the actual software for download by users, but that’s definitely what we’re all hoping for.

Personally, I’m a little confused. Verizon has axed the Storm2 refresh, but the screenshots of BlackBerry 6 on the invitation are of a portrait screen (either Storm series or Torch). The only BlackBerrys on Verizon that are slated to get BlackBerry 6 at this time are the Bold 9650 and the Curve 3G. You would think that the screenshots they put on the flyer would be of the actual software that will be launching, but it’s no secret that the people who design flyers and promotional ads aren’t always on top of things. Anyway, stay tuned pups, and we’ll keep you up-to-date on any additional information the Verizon BlackBerry 6 launch.

BlackBerry 6 Universal Search about to get voice activated

One of the most highlighted features in RIM’s new BlackBerry 6 is the Universal Search, and rightly so. At DevCon last week, some word was dropped about voice input being added to Universal Search.  Personally, this is no huge improvement as talking to technology never gets me very far. My voice is apparently incompatible with voice input. Regardless, I know voice search is a big thing for a lot of people. Coming from TechRadar:

At the BlackBerry developer conference last week, RIM announced even more search features. “With BlackBerry 6, I never look for the icons anymore,” RIM technical product manager Bhavuk Kaul said; “I just search for the name of the app.”

With a future update to BlackBerry 6, you won’t even need to search. Kaul said RIM would be adding voice input to Universal Search, so you’ll be able to tell your BlackBerry what you’re looking for. Voice search will be an extra search provider, and it will be an API that other apps can use.

Kaul is definitely en pointe, having Universal Search is definitely nice when launching an application. Slide, type, launch. It’s quick, easy, and extremely convenient. This seems to be the beginning of RIM trying to level the playing field with iOS and Android. Not that something as simple as voice search will do that, but it’s a step in the right directions. Baby steps, RIM. They have always focused on the little things that make you faster with your device, and it appears that RIM is trying not to deviate too far away from the original game plan.

What say you folks? Is voice activated universal search going to be a big feature for you? Will you use it often? Sound off below.

PlayBook having technical difficulties, will not arrive before next year

One thing us ‘Berryheads have been long awaiting with bated breath is official word of the BlackBerry tablet. We got what we wanted last week with the announcement of the PlayBook, but the only true effect that had was make us all foam at the mouths and struggle to stay in our seats. Now that RIM has our undivided attention and has restored our waning faith, an unwanted tidbit of information has made it to our impatient hands. Ashok Kumar, a Rodman & Renshaw analyst, says that RIM has cancelled plans for a 2010 BlackBerry PlayBook launch due to “technical issues.” According to word from Barron’s:

In a research note, Kumar contends the company’s new QNX Neutrino software platform “was not ready for prime time.” He also says that the Marvell Armada 610 applicationprocessor the company had planned to use was “bug ridden.” Kumar says the company has “jettisoned” Marvell from the PlayBook in favor of a processor from Texas Instruments.

One thing we have all learned over the past year is that this modern technology market is fast paced and doesn’t slow down for stragglers. I want RIM to succeed with the PlayBook, and I would rather them release it right and not botch another device release (Storm). However, they were already going to be slow to the market by launching at the end of this year, “early” next year may be too late. Let’s hope by early they mean a January or February release, we know how RIM loves to use the term “early” when it comes to setbacks.

APPsolutely unacceptable RIM

Distimo has released their ranking for application storefronts and RIM has not done as well as we would like as far as games are concerned when matched up against the competition. Among the likes of iPad, Palm, Windows, Ovi, and iPhone, RIM pretty much shared the number six spot with Palm. RIM’s free apps apps were even lower in ranking than their paid. Me personally, I feel as though free apps are a more important factor when building a stable app store. Consistency, quality, and a high number of available free apps will apply creditability to the app store and in return build a rapport that results in paid apps getting just as much play. Much like the case with Apple (who came out on top in the report). In a separate poll regarding the top paid and free apps were as follows:

QNX OS will one day be on all BlackBerrys

We hope you like what you’ve seen with the BlackBerry PlayBook, because you’re looking at the future of all BlackBerry devices. Earlier this morning during a  breakfast event at DevCon 2010, an unnamed RIM VP confirmed that the QNX OS seen on the PlayBook will eventually replace the BlackBerry OS we’ve known for so long. He emphasized the transition will be a gradual one, with BlackBerry 7 serving as something of a middle ground between the two platforms.

We’re thrilled to hear RIM’s “unofficial” plan, and from what we’ve seen, the QNX OS is everything RIM needs to bring it into the 21st century. Our major concern is centered around the developer environment. Already devs have largely abandoned ship in favor of iOS and Android, and having two support two platforms for the foreseeable future likely won’t win any friends. Perhaps RIM should take a page from Nokia’s Qt book?

We’d love to hear your thoughts on RIM’s planned transition, and on QNX in general. Let us know in the comments!
