BIS updated to 3.2 in North America

Remember when we got you all excited for Google Calendar Sync on your BlackBerry in the first place? Well now there’s some good news for some of you – or actually quite a lot. Research in Motion just released BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.2 to all carriers in North America. And as you might guess from my first sentence, the big news here is the addition of Google Calendar synchronization. All carriers offering BIS have reported that the upgrade went as planned and all the new options coming with BIS 3.2 are now available to their customers.

Let’s take a look at the features:

- Google Calendar Sync – Explains itself, does it? Sync your Gmail calendar with your device calendar
- Automatic Login Enhancement – Username and Password for accessing the BIS is no longer required when on your BlackBerry
- Show and Hide Password Option – Subscribers are now able to choose wether to show or hide the passwords for all email addresses that need to be validated
- New Password Criteria:
– must include 8 to 16 characters
– must include at least on letter and one number
– cannot include “password”
– cannot include the username of the BIS-account or BlackBerry email adress that the password is associated with

So, how do you feel about BIS 3.2? I’m not a fan of calendars and I never really used one (maybe I should start). Is Google Calendar Sync one of the features you’ve been waiting for? Tell us in the comments what you think.

BlackBerry Protect coming soon with BIS 3.2

With the upcoming BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.2, there will also be the possibility to use BlackBerry Protect. It’s a free service, only for BIS users, allowing you to help you find a lost or stolen smartphone and protect the information on it.

Features of BlackBerry Protect, accessable from any internet-enabled computer:

  • Lock your smartphone to protect its contents
  • Track the location of your smartphone
  • Back up your data (contacts, calendar, etc.)
  • Erase all data from your smartphone
  • Activate a loud ring tone so you can find your smartphone
  • Display a message on your Home screen

Sounds pretty useful to me. What are you guys thinking? If you wish to receive official notifications via e-mail, sign-up here.

BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 3.2 featuring Google Calendar Sync

RIM started rolling out BlackBerry Internet Service  (BIS) 3.2 in Australia yesterday. It’s going to reach us soon since RIM has published the new features in BIS 3.2. It’s going to have Google Calendar sync which a lot of people are excited to see.

Here’s a little overview of what you will get:

Google Mail Calendar Synchronization

Subscribers can perform two-way synchronization of Google® calendar entries and entries in the calendar application on the BlackBerry® smartphone.

  • Requires BlackBerry® Device Software 5.0.0.176 or later
  • For more information, please see KB24209

Automatic Login Enhancements

The automatic login feature is now available to more subscribers. Subscribers who use a user name and password to access their BlackBerry Internet Service accounts no longer have to type their user name and password on their smartphones to manage their email addresses.

  • Requires BlackBerry Device Software 4.6 and earlier
  • The BlackBerry smartphone must be associated with a wireless service provider that requires the use of a WAP browser on the smartphone to access email management screens

Show and Hide Password Option

Subscribers can choose to show or hide the passwords for all email addresses that need to be validated by clicking the Show password or Hide password options.

New Password Criteria

Newly created passwords for BlackBerry Internet Service accounts and BlackBerry email addresses must meet new criteria.

  • Must include 8 to 16 characters
  • Must include at least one letter and one number
  • Cannot include the word “password”
  • Cannot include the user name of the BlackBerry Internet Service account or BlackBerry email address that the password is associated with

Are you excited about calendar synchronization? I’m not that hyped because I usually don’t use the calendar a lot. I just checked and it’s not yet available in Germany, but as always, I think I’ll have to wait quite a bit until it will reach me.

Leaked: BIS 3.2 features

bisoverview

Regardless of the fact that BIS 3.1 was pushed out under two months ago, we already have a rumor on what 3.2 will hold for us!  Remember to take the following information with a grain of salt, as this is purely rumor.  Google Calendar sync will be added (for those Google-ites such as myself), interface and security will both be improved, as well as BlackBerry Protect integration.

For those of you already using Google Sync, you understand how the process works.  For those of you who don’t, let me explain.  Google Sync allows one to sync both their contacts and their calendar to a google account of their choice.  This allows contact checking and use of calender, even when your device isn’t on hand.  Google Sync will not become integrated into BIS (minus contact sync) for those of you who prefer staying 100% RIM.

The security update will basically demand at least 8 characters for your password, instead of the current 6.  Automatic login will also be improved (from your device) allowing you to quickly access, edit, or add new email information.

BlackBerry Protect contains a massive amount of information.  For more information on that, click here.

This sounds like a much needed BIS update, although I find it rather minor.  It seems like not much is contained within the update, and RIM is really falling behind the game for me.  I feel like I signed up for a reliable, well balanced, well supported device, and what I’ve received is below expectations.  I love RIM, but they really need to step up to the plate.  BlackBerry 6 seems to be the beginning of RIM stepping out of their comfort zone, but they need not stay there too long.  They better pull out the big guns and take aim on something larger than a UI overhaul.

RIM publishes BIS 3.1 Documentation

rim_logo_black

Research In Motion has officially published documentation for the upcoming BIS 3.1 (expected next month), and it largely confirms what we’ve been expecting. The major hitting points are:

  • Two-way contact (address book) sync with Yahoo! and Windows Live Hotmail and Sync ML (ALT-N)  (Note: I was unable to find any mention of Snyc ML, but I may have just missed it.)
  • Ability to share credentials on the device for an overall easier Windows Live experience (Always nice for the Windows Live users out there.)
  • User able to self delete BIS account (added security)

While not game changing, these are nice, incremental upgrades to the BIS platform (especially the added Yahoo! sync and the self-delete option) that should continue to enhance its functionality. The next BIS is expected sometime in October, and is rumored to be adding calendar sync with Yahoo! and Google, along with a small-business oriented management console. For full documentation regarding the 3.1 release, head on over to the BlackBerry documentation site (and then come back and let us know what you think!).
