BlackBerry Podcast application gets a 1.0.0.48 update

If you’re a podcast listener, and you have been using the native podcast application, then you are in luck!  The update for BlackBerry Podcast is available in the app world (if you don’t feel like going through the trouble, I’m sure it will be pushed to you soon).  No luck on what this update does, but I expect that it is mainly bug fixes.  If you find any specific changes, please let us know in the comments below!

Hootsuite for BlackBerry goes into free public beta

As you may or may not know, Hootsuite is one of the most advanced desktop social-networking applications available.  It combines a laundry list of features for those of you who use things like Twitter and Facebook the way we do here at BBerrydog.

Hootsuite has just made it’s way to BlackBerry smartphones.  Currently in public beta, Hootsuite allows you to access your Facebook and Twitter feeds with ease.  Whether you are posting or reading, Hootsuite takes this all into one place.  Touchscreen BlackBerrys are supported, as well as everything from 4.2 to 6.0. You can find Hootsuite here, but, before downloading, make sure to read the next paragraph.

As many of you may know, I am a Curve 8530 user.  The Curve is one of the lowest end 5.0 BlackBerrys out there.  The processor is slow and the phone can be extremely laggy at time.  That being said, Hootsuite is terrible on this phone.  I found that my phone was lagging all over the place.  Hootsuite managed to make a slow phone even slower.  I hate to sound campy, but if you’re using a low-end BlackBerry like myself, I’d strongly recommend going elsewhere for your Twitter and Facebook needs.

BlackBerry Dropbox beta updated to version 1.0.34

As a student, I  must say that Dropbox is something that I live and die by.  The fact that I can back up all of my documents in a central location is fantastic.  Since the application has arrived on BlackBerry, I have been using it to transfer pictures and documents to my desktop from my phone and vice-versa.  One of the best things, I must say, is the ability to edit my documents on the go!

But enough about my uses, because the application just got better.  The application, prior to the update, was buggy at best.  It was difficult to use and somethings just didn’t work. Nonetheless, the update is said to fix that.  Since I’ve updated, I have noticed that the application is faster and easy to use.  If you have any other experiences (especially negative) please let us know in the comments below!

Chat for Facebook available in App World

Nowadays everyone likes to keep in touch with friends and one of the best ways to do so is Facebook. Along with Facebook comes of course the Facebook chat, which a lot of people use and quite some people are missing on their phones. Not every IM client on BlackBerry can handle Facebook chat the way you might want it to. The “Chat for Facebook” app is a dedicated app that only does what it says, chatting on Facebook. All you have to do is purchase, install, login and start off. You can see your online contacs and conversations and of course: chat.
The app is priced at $4.99, of which I think that it’s hardly worth it, even if you’re a hardcore Facebook user. For more information check App World on a BlackBerry near you or click here.

What do you guys think? Do you need the Facebook chat on your BlackBerry? Are you using it with an IM client? Or not using it at all? I myself keep Facebook chat off at all times, because it’s just annoying to me.

ESPN Radio App for BlackBerry

There are a few mediocre sports apps in Blackberry App World, none I can really say worth mentioning. So I expect to see  a lot of downloads in the coming weeks. The app has been on the Android platform since July and has been somewhat critically acclaimed, so its safe to say you’ll get your $2.99′s worth. One app highlight is its capability to play and stream live radio in the background. Listen to every. Also enjoy the On Demand sports channel that’s updated every 20 minutes to give you up to the most accurate, to the minute, sports updates. Live broadcasts are from the following stations:

  • ESPN Radio Network Feed
  • ESPN Deportes Network Feed
  • KSPN – 710 AM Los Angeles, CA
  • KESN – 103.3 FM Dallas, TX
  • WMVP – 1000 AM Chicago, IL
  • WEPN – 1050 AM New York, NY

UberTwitter updated to v. 0.993

I believe Uber Twitter to be the best Twitter client for the BlackBerry platform outside of the RIM client. Mainly because of the “retweet w/ editing” option provided. They have nothing on the interface design of the RIM app, but back to the purpose of the post. On the 8th, they released update version 0.993 and it does come equipped with some substantial improvements and upgrades. Here’s a list of features they provided with the release:

Release 2 features and change log

  • Map Provider Allow users to select either MapQuest (default) or BlackBerry maps to display users locations.
  • User action to retrieve a map You now have to click the ‘Retrieve Map’ button after opening a tweet in order for the map to be retrieved. This will result in substantially lower bandwidth requirements and improved battery life.
  • UberChannel date display bug fix Fixed a bug where tweets in UberChannel streams had the date incorrectly displayed.
  • Resetting tweets to retrieve bug Fixed bug where on an upgrade the number of tweets to retrieve would reset to 60.
  • Highlight color in Midnight Theme bubble layout The highlight color in the Midnight theme when using the bubble layout is now much easier to discern.
  • Text Ad color We changed the color of the text ads to conform to the them colors. The ads are still clearly marked as an advertisement.
  • GPS Radio Activation The GPS radio will now only be activated when you open the compose tweet screen IF you have selected to use the GPS radio to determine location. This should greatly reduce battery drain, but may result in the location mechanism falling back to the cell tower method on some occasions

One problem I’ve seen fixed was my mentions. Usually after I received a notification and checked them, the app would still show the mentions unchecked, so I would have to consistently check to make sure there were no new mentions, needless to say, this involved plenty refreshes and in turn drained my battery rather quickly. But I’ve been using the updated version for about to days now and I’ve not had that problem so that’s definitely a plus for development. Other than that it’s still the quality app its always been (sans the Ads), so be sure to get the updated version if your already running it or check it out for the first time if you’ve been using another client.

Free BlackBerry Torch contest from Qwell

Qwell, I must say, is a very cool application.  But that’s not why we’re here!  For every 1000 followers on Twitter or 1000 page likes on Facebook, Qwell will select one lucky winner for a free BlackBerry torch.  You read that correctly, pups…. FREE.  The contest costs nothing to enter and Qwell currently has a 14 day trial going on, so make sure to check that out by clicking on the corresponding link below.

APPsolutely unacceptable RIM

Distimo has released their ranking for application storefronts and RIM has not done as well as we would like as far as games are concerned when matched up against the competition. Among the likes of iPad, Palm, Windows, Ovi, and iPhone, RIM pretty much shared the number six spot with Palm. RIM’s free apps apps were even lower in ranking than their paid. Me personally, I feel as though free apps are a more important factor when building a stable app store. Consistency, quality, and a high number of available free apps will apply creditability to the app store and in return build a rapport that results in paid apps getting just as much play. Much like the case with Apple (who came out on top in the report). In a separate poll regarding the top paid and free apps were as follows:

Trillian v1.1 beta for BlackBerry available now

You read about the initial release of Trillian for BlackBerry quite a while ago, launching into App World with version 1.0. It’s been a while and now they’re launching 1.1 which is available as a free beta download. Free? Yes, it’s free as long as it’s beta. I really don’t get this, if I had bought Trillian 1.0, this would be kind of annoying to me. Still, if you bought Trillian 1.0, you can upgrade to this version upon its release.
Basically what this release is about, is bugfixes and improvements based on the feedback given from the first beta testers.

Here are the changes in version 1.1:

  • Landscape support
  • Messages inbox integration
  • New emoticon button and browser
  • Group contact list by service
  • Option to start Trillian on device boot
  • Much faster opening of message windows
  • ‘Connect all’ and ‘disconnect all’ options
  • Various other bugfixes and minor improvements.

It’s available as a free OTA download here and if you like Trillian for BlackBerry and would like to see further improvements, you might want to leave some feedback.
