T-Mobile is no longer selling the BlackBerry Curve 8900

javelin2

The Curve 8900 hasn’t been out that long with T-Mobile, maybe a little over a year.  T-Mobile has said that the 8900 has reached the “end of it’s life cycle”.  The trackball BlackBerry devices seem to be fading out, with the introduction of the new trackpad.  Could they be preparing their shelves for the new 8910?  Also the other day the pictures of the 9100 revealed that it will be coming to T-Mobile in the future. How does our T-Mobile 8900 owners feel about this?

Nav4All navigation shut down by Navteq

nav4all

In three days Nav4All will stop their services, because their data license agreement with Navteq was not extended.  Nav4All has been developed into a global product with 27.5 million users and in 56 different languages.  This has made Nav4All the largest navigation supplier.  If you are one of those 27.5 million users, I am sure this is some sad news, but in their letter they say they are suspending the operation, so they may bring it back in the future.

Here is short excerpt from the letter to their customers:

We greatly regret the fact that we have to suspend the operation of our service. With your help, we have developed Nav4All into a global product with 27.5 million users in 56 languages, in 5 years. This has made Nav4All the largest navigation supplier. This large number of users also has to do with the fact that Nav4All works on hundreds of different mobile telephones of many makes such as Blackberry, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola, Android, HTC, Nokia, LG, Iphone, Ipod etc.

After 5 years of testing and market development, we witnessed rapid – in fact, exponential – growth during the last two years. That growth was reported in the licence reports to Navteq. In mid-December 2009, the global coverage was extended to include the Philippines, Morocco and Kenya.

If you would like to read the full letter or have anymore questions concerning the matter, head over to www.nav4all.com.

T-Mobile starting trackball replacement program

If you own a BlackBerry Pearl 8100/8120 or Curve 8320 from T-Mobile, then this is some good news for you.  Starting February 15th, T-Mobile will replace any trackballs that are not working properly.  There will not be any charge for this, but your BlackBerry smartphone has to have been purchased from T-Mobile.  This is a great service that T-Mobile is starting up, I am sure all their BlackBerry customers will appreciate this.

Video of new BlackBerry “Magnum” prototype

The guys over at thecellularguru.com have put up a video of the new prototype from RIM called the Magnum.  They released pictures a few weeks ago, and this video proves that the pictures weren’t fake.  This is like RIMs crossover device, a mix between the traditional QWERTY keyboard and the new SurePress technology introduced with the Storm.  The Magnum looks a lot like the original Bold 9000, with a few minor changes.  Not sure about the hardware inside the phone but physically almost the same with the addition of Micro USB and removal of the trackball.  I am curious to know if the screen is going to be like the original Storm, with the one button under the screen or like the new Storm2 which uses Piezo technology.  What does everyone think about this video?  Would you buy a BlackBerry that had a full QWERTY keyboard and a touchscreen?

Verizon to offer prepaid BlackBerry devices?

curve_vzw

According to BerryScoop, Verizon is planning on expanding its prepaid phones and options by including BlackBerry.  This could happen as early as three months.  Rumor is that the plan adds $35 on top of the voice package, and the phone prices would be somewhere in between the subsidized price and the full retail cost.  I’m not sure if this will include unlimited data or not.  If this is true this could be the way for people who would love to get a BlackBerry, but is turned away by the high cost of owning one.

Blackberry Tour 9630 not returning to Best Buy?

Blackberry Tour

According to some inside information over at the Boy Genius Report it looks like the Tour could be leaving the shelves of Best Buy.  Once they sell out they won’t be getting anymore in stock.  Maybe Best Buy has some inside information from RIM.

Although he doesn’t get carrier specific, could this be true?  Does this tell us that the new Tour2 (Essex) will be hitting the shelves in its place?  I am currently using my Tour and I am anxiously waiting for the Essex to be released.  What do all the Tour users out there think about this?

Motorola files a complaint with ITC against RIM

It’s all lawsuits and complaints galore this year with Apple against Nokia, Nokia against Apple and now Motorola against Research In Motion. Apparently, according to Motorola, RIM is violating five Motorola patents which involve Wi-Fi access, application management, power management and UI. So, Motorola decided to file a complaint with the International Trade Commission, or ITC, in hopes to block the import of any and all devices that violate its patents. We’re guessing that means virtually all new devices. And if RIM decides to side-step the issue and continue delays, Motorola’s IP attorney says:

In light of RIM’s continued unlicensed use of Motorola’s patents, RIM’s use of delay tactics in our current patent litigation, and RIM’s refusal to design out Motorola’s proprietary technology, Motorola had no choice but to file a complaint with the ITC to halt RIM’s continued infringement. Motorola will continue to take all necessary steps to protect its R&D and intellectual property.

We’re guessing, or hoping, that some licensing deals can be worked out between the two companies so things can go on business as usual. But at this point, it’s kinda looking like “If you can’t beat them, block them” on Motorola’s end. What do you guys think? Tort reform!
