BlackBerry Playbook spotted in Black Eyed Peas video

More and more news on the BlackBerry PlayBook emerge. It’s no surprise to see some PlayBook shots in the latest Black Eyes Peas videos, since Will.I.Am is a hardcore BlackBerry user and so it seems he’s already got a PlayBook. The video was posted to his Dipvide website featuring a PlayBook every now and then. Take a look and give us your thoughts in the comments.

SecondTab – extra browser tab for OS 5.0

Not everybody uses a BlackBerry 6 device or runs a leak on his device, so not everyone’s using the WebKit browser which brings along tabbed browsing. We got lucky and Fabian Heuwieser released a free and useful app that helps us out a bit – SecondTab. SecondTab enables you to open a second browser window on your OS 5.0 device. To use the app you simply have to activate it from the menu while being in the browser, then you’ll be able to to swap using the application switcher (hold down the menu key). It’s not exactly opening up a second browser, more like opening up a seperate app, allowing you to enter a URL and browse the web.

Actually it’s pretty useful, especially for those who are stuck with OS 5.0 and desperately waiting for a useable BlackBerry 6 leak for their device. It’s free and pretty neat, so feel free to give it a try. Make sure to share your thoughts in the comments.

Storm 3 specs revealed

Ready for some Storm 3 rumors? Yeah? Well, okay, here we go: The guys from BBLeaks have received some reports on what may be the specs for the Storm 3. It’s not sure yet, if it’s going to be called the Storm 3 since it was rumored as an ‘odin refresh’. Still, Research in Motion has been working on making a new device to help the Storm series regain popularity.

This is the spec list created from the different sources, so keep in mind that this is just a rumor and some of the listed items have multiple options, i.e. camera pixels or Memory.

  • Camera: 5MP, 2592×1944 pixels or 8 MP, 3264×2448 pixels, fixed focus, dual-LED flash
  • Memory: 8 or 16 GB storage w/ optional expandable to 32GB, 512 MB or 1GB RAM, 1 GB ROM
  • Display:  3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
  • GPRS: Class 32
  • Optical trackpad
  • Ringtones: MP3, WAV ringtones
  • MP3: MP3/WAV/eAAC+/WMA player, MP4/H.264/H.263/WMV player
  • Bluetooth: Yes, v3.0 with A2DP
  • 3G: HSDPA, 10.2 Mbps; HSUPA, 2 Mbps
  • Addons: Wi-Fi, USB, GPS, OS, Video
  • Weight: Standard battery, Li-Ion 1200 mAh (BL-4D)
  • Talktime: Up to 432 h (2G) / Up to 480 h (3G)
  • Standby: Up to 9 h (2G) / Up to 5 h (3G)

The image above seems to actually be the Storm 3, according to what BBLeaks’ sources said. It’s still unclear if we’ll see the ‘ordinary’ BlackBerry 6 on the device or if we’ll get to see QNX software. Personally, I’m hoping to see some kind of QNX OS on it. What about you?

Adding to the list, there were also rumors that the Storm 3 could be the first 4G BlackBerry, but there hasn’t been any mention of it for the current specs. Keep in mind, that those are just rumors, so take ‘em with a grain of salt, but don’t be too surprised if the device hits the stores in early 2011 as the BlackBerry Storm 3.

Anyone got excited (again)? Tell us in the comments below.

BlackBerry Curve 3G coming to WIND Mobile confirmed

Remember the BlackBerry Curve 3G showing up on the WIND Mobile website even though it didn’t belong to the actual line up? Well, now the device has shown up in WIND Mobile’s inventory system. There are two listings, so there’s going to be two colors available. The guys from BGR assumed that there will be a gray or black and something a little more brighter available. No words or information on pricing or an actual release date yet.

Is anyone of you already waiting for the device to hit the carrier?

AT&T confirms red and white BlackBerry Torch 9800 coming November 7th

As already expected, AT&T finally confirmed the release of the white and red BlackBerry Torch. They’re going to launch November 7th, as announced in their holiday press release. No words on pricing yet but unless there’s going to be a holiday promotion, thy’ll pretty much be the same as the BlackBerry Torch already available from AT&T – so it’s $199.99 with a new 2 year contract.

Personally, I’m a fan of the white Torch, although my white Bold 9700 turned blue after some time. What do you guys think? Do you prefer the original design or do you like the red or white better?

Rogers BlackBerry Bold 9780 dummy devices showing up

Just two days after Research In Motion announced the BlackBerry Bold 9780 we get to find out about dummy devices being sent out to retailers. Rogers has already confirmed they will be releasing the Bold 9780, yet no words on an actual launch date or pricing. Typically, it doesn’t take too long for a launch, once dummy devices arrived in stores.

BlackBerry Curve 3G coming to WIND mobile?

Good news for some of our Canadian readers out there! WIND Mobile outed the BlackBerry Curve 3G as one of their upcoming devices via their own website. If the information on the WIND Mobile BlackBerry download page is correct, we will see the Curve 3G pop up sometime soon. They posted OS 5.0.0.977 for the BlackBerry Curve 3G, which doesn’t even show up in their current line up. It’s kind of funny to see the OS before the device.

If you’re in Canada and catch onto some news, make sure to let us know!

First 3rd party web browser for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Some of you may know that the BlackBerry PlayBook SDK wasn’t quite full of content as some have hoped. There were no apps preloaded and not even a web browser built in. Good for us, there’s always someone that doesn’t like things the way they are and decides to make something better – or in this case: just make something. Jerome from BBerryGo took a look at the SDK and pretty much decided if there’s no web browser, he should make one.

Watch the video below to get an idea of what a developers can do with the PlayBook SDK in only two and a half hours of work. Of course the PlayBook itself will include a browser, yet this is a good example of how fast apps can be developed with the given SDK.

What do you guys think? Watch the video and leave us a comment.

Longer version of the PlayBook demo video available

The BlackBerry PlayBook is getting me all excited these days, not just because it’s brand new and it will take a while until I can get my hands on one, but also because there’s more and more information showing up. The demo video of the PlayBook at Adobe MAX 2010 posted yesterday was only short clip and today Adobe decided to post a longer version of the clip. So if you enjoyed yesterday’s clip, why not have a look at this one:

Are you getting excited about the PlayBook yet? If you still feel the need to get more information, you can also head over to Adobe MAX online and watch a full replay of the Adobe MAX 2010 keynote.

Verizon preparing for BlackBerry 6 launch?

Good news for everyone on Verizon Wireless! It looks just like Verizon is getting ready for an update to BlackBerry 6. It’s coming to the Bold 9650 and the Curve 3G for sure but it’s not yet known when Verizon decides to update, but now it seems they’re getting closer to an actual release.

This was discovered by some people running the previously leaked OS 6.0.0.280 that were asked to update their Email Setup Application. It also seems this is only happening when you’re setting up a new BIS email account. Did anyone of you come across this as well?

BlackBerry PlayBook live demo at Adobe MAX 2010

Since the BlackBerry PlayBook has officially been unveiled, RIM hasn’t given any chance to see the device in action ..until today! Today, at Adobe’s MAX conference, they showed off the PlayBook for everyone to see. RIM is aiming at bringing us the full web experience rather than giving us the typical smartphone-experience we already know from lots of devices. For demonstration a YouTube Video was played on the PlayBook straight from the YouTube page thanks to the PlayBook’s full support of Flash 10.1.

It looked all pretty smooth but I found it to be a little laggy at times. That’s not the real deal though, the PlayBook won’t launch until early 2011, so there’s a good chance we’ll see some improvements. It’s definitely more interesting to me than the Galaxy Tab or the iPad. What about you? Do you consider getting the PlayBook when it comes out? Or will you rather get an iPad or one of the upcoming Android Tablets?
Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments, we love to read it!

Now go ahead and watch the full clip featuring the PlayBook:

SDK from RIM allows devs to create Adobe AIR apps for the PlayBook

The BlackBerry Playbook is the first tablet that’s built to run Flash 10.1 from scratch, so we’re pretty excited to hear about todays SDK release, allowing the development of apps for Adobe AIR.

The SDK includes new extensions which “have been highly optimized” for the BlackBerry Playbook’s OS. Some of the more exciting features will be hardware accelerated playback of video and graphics-intensive content in the browser and within AIR, it was specifically designed for the touchscreen, suppoting multitouch and gestures and there will be application notifications.

All in all, that leaves high hopes for some pretty awesome AIR apps in the future. I, personally, am hoping to see a version of TweetDeck on the PlayBook. What about you? Let us know in the comments.

If you want to find out more about it, for example what the developers are saying, why not read the full press release:

Balsillie fires back at Jobs over his commentary on 7″ tablets

As Steve Jobs made his suprise appearance at the financial results conference call for Apple’s Q4 results on October 18 he was talking about tablets and how 7-inch tablets are DOA (dead on arrival). He said that 7″ tablets are just 45% as large as the iPad’s screen. While that might be true, he forgot about people wishing for a more pocketable device to use as a tablet. The rumor about the 7″ iPad was clearly wiped out and according to Jobs, 10″ is a minimum for a tablet for the users to be able to touch accurately.

Well, why would you care? Today, Jim Balsillie (Co-CEO at RIM) repied with a comment on the Inside BlackBerry blog. It’s worth reading, so go ahead and take a look:

For those of us who live outside of Apple’s distortion field, we know that 7” tablets will actually be a big portion of the market and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience. We also know that while Apple’s attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options and customers want to fully access the overwhelming majority of web sites that use Flash. We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter. Apple’s preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM’s August-ending quarter doesn’t tell the whole story because it doesn’t take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger than summer months, nor does it explain why Apple only shipped 8.4 million devices in its prior quarter and whether Apple’s Q4 results were padded by unfulfilled Q3 customer demand and channel orders. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story.

– Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion (RIM)

I, personally, think Jim Balsillie is right. If I’m going to carry a tablet in the future, it should be capable of Flash and it also should be more pocketable than the iPad. So, what do you guys think? Do you think Jobs is right about 7″ tablets? Or do you think the other way around, 7″ tablets are the sweet spot? Give us your thoughts in the comments, what’s your take on this whole tablet-feud?

Storm 3 spotted in Verizon’s system

If you’re on Verizon Wireless and you’re jealous of everyone on AT&T using their Torches and everything, don’t worry, there might just be some good news for you. The Storm series was liked and disliked a lot and a lot of people were not exactly what you would call happy when they learned that RIM won’t update just one of them to BlackBerry 6. However, the Storm 3 (9570) just popped up in Cellbrite (an internal system used by Verizon Wireless service technicians).

What exactly does this mean? Well, there’s now a little chance that we might see the Storm 3 hitting the store shelves somewhen in the near future, equipped with BlackBerry 6.
What do you guys think? Do you want a BlackBerry Storm 3 or would you rather want BlackBerry 6 ported to your old an beloved Storm 1 and 2′s?

BlackBerry Bold 9780 to release on Bell Mobility Nov. 2

Look who shows up again, it’s the Bold 9780. Virgin Mobile and Vodafone UK already had their pricing leaked and now Bell Mobility is next. They will be offering the Bold 9780 beginning on November 2. The handset will be available in black and white. It’s packing a 2.44-inch HVGA display with 480×360 resolution, Wi-Fi, a 5 megapixel camera just like the Torch, 512MB of RAM and of course BlackBerry 6. We don’t know yet the subsidized pricing but it will retail for $499.99.

This is good news for Canada, I’m hoping the device will show up in the US pretty soon as for I, in Germany, will have to wait quite a while. Are you excited about it? Or would you rather stay with your device?

BlackBerry PlayBook comes in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, powered by 5,300mAh battery

Some more PlayBook news showed up. Most of the specs were already known but now we get to add some details. Just like the iPad, the PlayBook will have 16GB, 32GB and even 64GB variants available. Alongside it will be powered by a huge 5,300mAh battery. Sounds pretty good, actually I’m hoping for long battery life to be one of it’s strengths.

Check out more in the following video of Jim Balsillie at GITEX:

What do you guys think? Still on fire for the PlayBook? Or just starting to want one?
