Rumor: More information on BlackBerry 6 and which devices will receive it

BlackBerryRumor

Golly gee, do we have a monster sized biscuit for you today, pups? Before I begin, please remember to take this with a grain of salt, as these are only rumors.

One of the biggest question on most peoples mind is about which devices will be getting BlackBerry 6.  At launch, the 9670 (clamshell), Bold 9800 Torch (slider), Atlas 8980, and Keppler 9300 will have BlackBerry 6 pre-installed.  BB6 updates will be available for the 9650, Pearls 9100 and 9105, Bold 9700, and the Storm2.  This seems to confirm the theory that the phones must have more than 256MB of memory in order to receive BlackBerry 6 (Remember though, these are only rumors. Don’t lose hope, folks).

Now the part that many of you may be waiting for, features not shown in the BB6 video. BlackBerry 6 is rumored to feature the following:

  • Multiple contact lists
  • Inclusion of  3rd-party apps in the message list
  • WiFi LBS support
  • Trackpad support for the swiping shown in BB6 video
  • Improved Auto-focus
  • Barcode scanning (1D or 2D)
  • Geographical location to zip geo-coding.
  • Travel-time within the United States and Canada

BlackBerry 6 is set to be released in the third quarter of 2010. Personally, I am extremely perturbed that certain new phones will not be getting BlackBerry 6. I purchased my Curve 8530 under 7 months ago, I would consider that a recent phone. This is not a smart move for RIM by any means. If anything, I think it could hinder RIM’s sales. If RIM refuses to service not only those with higher end phones, but also those who bought the entry level devices, that seems to me like a money grubbing tactic, or it shows that they were caught on their heels by the smartphone market. I love my BlackBerry, but this is just unfair of RIM. If you agree or disagree, share your thoughts below.  I know I’m not the only dog in the pound, so please bark it up.

  1. I have a BB Storm. Works pretty good since the OS5 update last year. I like BB products but RIM is not keeping up with touchscreen competition e.g. Android & Iphone. They said it right 6 mos. ago when the CEO said in so many words that touchscreen phones was not what people wanted. Not what I see. I’m interested in the rumor of Storm 3 and new features, but RIM needs to tell people what their plan is before lots more BB users jump ship to Android phones. Just Sayin!! Come on RIM, tell us something and do something in the touch screen arena, or we are gone.

  2. Well If it’s a ram issue then maybe I can under stand… But My 9530 Isn’t that old as well… RIM should have though this out more, All I know is that if this is in fact the case, I will not own another BB, I mean yes this thing has bin a tank, And has done everything I asked it. But when a company drops support of a devise because it wasn’t a total smash, That’s just pain bad busness.

  3. I can understand the 8530 not getting the update, with its lower resolutions and processing power. but what about those of us with 8900 series and above ?

  4. I completely agree with you. I just got a replacement BB8900 because the old one broke and because it was then a recent device I got a free update to OS5 and I will definitely hoping that OS6 will be available to everyone with a recently bought device.
I think that RIM had to make themselves more mainstream in order to in any way compete with the likes of Apple. Many young people are also starting to use blackberry for BBM which is a very good thing for RIM and something they possibly have over Apple, but they need to start valuing they’re customers and issuing free software updates!!
