For all of you who were waiting patiently for RIM’s own Twitter for BlackBerry client, the painful wait is over! This release isn’t an official release, but it is a public beta now that is openly available in App World. Since it’s a beta release, it can be found in the Test Center part of App World. If you downloaded the leaked version from a few days ago, there is no need to download this public beta, it’s the same version (1.0.0.37). Features and download links can be found after the jump.

Based on user feedback from the private beta, here are the new features RIM incorporated into the public beta release:

  • Notifications of New Tweets and @Replies/Mentions
    • When an @reply/mention is received, the user will be notified with a splat on the BlackBerry home screen ribbon as well as the application icon
    • Users will also be notified of new tweets in the BlackBerry Messages list
  • Twitter Lists Functionality
    • Comprehensive option to build a list of Twitter users on any subject
      • Ability to add members to the list and view subscribers of the lists
    • Users can also view other users’ lists
  • Profile Editing
    • Users can edit their own Twitter profile from the application
    • Users can also change their profile image from the application
  • Personalization Settings
    • Users can customize the look of the application with the ability to:
      • Show/hide the navigation bar and tweetbox
      • Change the font/style to their own preferred choice
    • Users can click on a Twitter profile image and it will be enlarged for better viewing abilities
  • Improved in-Application Caching/Polling
    • Increased on-device caching for Timeline; Mentions to improve application performance
    • Enlarged Avatar (Profile Picture) Viewing
      • Push Notifications for Direct Messages
      • Timeline Support
      • Following & Followers
      • Posting, Sending, Deleting, Replying and Re-Tweeting Tweets
      • User/Saved/Keyword/Proximity Search

This definitely makes using Twitter solely from a BlackBerry much easier and give you a lot of control. For example, profile editing and uploading your own picture, those are two features I have yet to see in any other clients. Mind you, I may have simply overlooked these features because they aren’t something I would expect from a mobile client, but they are cool features nonetheless. So, head on over to App World to download your copy of Twitter for BlackBerry, or you can hit the link for the OTA version. Tell us what you think! This is still in beta, so please, give all the feedback you can if there are features still missing that you wish to see in their Twitter client!
