Review: Poynt

I can never seem to think of a place to eat when I’m out and about or on vacation. Poynt comes to save the day fairly regularly in my life. I have been using Poynt since the initial beta release and have loved it from the start. Among being one of the most visually pleasing applications available for BlackBerry, it is also the most useful of all of the location based search applications I have tried. I have used Berry 411, Live Search, and many other search applications from the time that I started using my first BlackBerry a few years ago. Nobody provides quite as complete of a service as the Poynt team.

The different services that are provided within the application are movie times, White Pages, Yellow Pages, restaurants, gas prices, and a map of your search. You have the option to search based on an address, your current GPS location, or your cell-site location.

A few new additions to the newly revised Poynt application are weather, and a background that changes to match the current weather. For instance, in the picture below it is night time. About an hour ago the background was the standard Poynt background. Another new feature is gas prices. You can search by closest gas stations, or by the best prices around chosen by the different grades of gasoline.

When it comes to movie times, the Poynt team didn’t stop at just offering a reference to the playing times of movies, but they took it to the next level and give movie details such as a synopsis, cast, runtime, and directors. Not only can you add a specific movie time to your calendar, you can also email the event to a friend, and you can even buy the tickets straight from the phone (barring the theater supports mobile purchases of tickets).

For anything that you search for, or anything that you stumble across using Poynt, you can also get directions from your current location to your new find. Poynt supports the native BlackBerry Maps, and Google Maps. It works seamlessly with both and completes this awesome application.

All in all Poynt is one of my favorite multi-resource applications for location based searches. It is a very well rounded app that extends the functionality of your BlackBerry by leaps and bounds. It is nothing fancy, but it gets the job done with ease. Whether you’re out of town or hanging with some friends and don’t know what to do, you can rely on Poynt to get the job done.
